The Distance Project

In April 2020 I started taking posed photos of people taking exercise in my local park, one of the few things we were allowed to do under the recently started Covid lockdown.

At first I framed every photo so that there was a good two metres ( as per the minimum social distancing rule) between the subject and the sides of the photo.

I kept to this rule as much as possible as the project went on.

I continued taking photos through the various stages of the restrictions, the scope widening but always asking, “What are people doing differently under lockdown?”.

The project was mostly historical record, but also part personal story. So I took self portraits, like the shot here in the closed launderette where I’m in electrician mode.

When lockdown pretty much ended in June 2021 I went to see my first live band in 16 months. It was a great release.

Here are just a few of the 800+ photos that make up the finished project.
